CARVEC is a self-contained digital flight control system specifically designed for small helicopters. It provides stability augmentation in the pitch/roll axis, as well as the usual heading-hold gyro and rotor-speed governor functions.
The main system unit contains a complete attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) which utilises the latest in low-drift MEMS gyroscope technology. It also houses three high-performance microprocessors to integrate the whole flight-control system into an extremely rugged extruded aluminium enclosure only 85mm by 52mm by 23mm.
Flying with CARVEC turns movements of the right-stick of the transmitter into pitch+roll angle demands. When the stick is released, the helicopter returns to the level position.
The amount of pitch+roll for full stick movements is fully configurable using the PC groundstation software - as are many other parameters. The system automatically corrects for any uncommanded attitude changes of the helicopter - dramatically reducing the workload of the pilot.
The CARVEC system is so small and light that it can easily be fitted to a small electric or .30 size machine. It shares its power supply with the servo motors (using a regular 4.8V battery) and consumes <0.5W.
It operates in any location (day or night) - even indoors. It is not confused by light or heat and, once setup, needs no regular calibration or adjustment.
